The boutique

A room above a bookshop

Up a narrow staircase on Cliffe High Street, with the river at one end and second-hand paperbacks underneath. One rail room, one mirror, one bride at a time, and a workroom at the back where the gowns are actually altered.

What is here

Small on purpose

A boutique this size cannot carry everything, so it carries six houses properly instead of twenty badly. Here is the whole shop in numbers, including the parts that are deliberately missing.

80

Gowns on the rail

Around eighty at any time, every one of them tried on a real body before it was bought for the shop. We know which ones need a strapless bra, which ones are heavy on a hot day, and which ones have taken four fittings to sit right. That is the point of buying small.

They hang in one room rather than four, so a morning here covers the whole shop twice over. Nothing is kept in a stockroom and nothing is shown only on request.

Bride in the room

90

Minutes, start to finish

And none of the rest of it

No shop floor to browse alone, no commission, no checkout at midnight, no clipboard of add-ons at the till. If a gown is not right, we say so, and you are welcome to leave with nothing.

The workroom

The back of the same room

Alterations are not a service we arrange for you. They happen eight feet from where you first put the gown on, on a table that has been there longer than the rail has.

That proximity is the whole reason the shop works. A hem is pinned with your shoes on, a bustle is tied in front of the person who will have to tie it on the day, and a bodice that gapes is taken in by the hand that will press it afterwards. Nothing is boxed up and posted to a unit on an industrial estate.

How we work

Four things we hold to

01

One appointment at a time

There is one fitting room, so there is one bride. Nobody is listening through a curtain and nobody is waiting for your mirror.

02

The price is on the rail

Every gown is ticketed. You will not be shown something at £3,400 to make the £1,800 one feel sensible.

03

No size surcharge

A 28 costs what a 6 costs, from every house we carry. We checked that before we signed any of them.

04

We say what we think

Asked directly, you will get a direct answer. A boutique that calls everything beautiful is no use to anyone standing on a box.

Come up and see the room

Appointments run ninety minutes, for you and up to three guests. Tell us the wedding date and we will find a time that suits.
